Masonry & Carving

Stonemasonry | Stone Carving | Chimneypieces | Church Monuments

Carving and restorative masonry lies at the core of much of our stone conservation.

The traditional skills of cutting and carving of stone are a pre requisite for any stone conservation company.

Ballyfin, Ireland - Carving Repairs on Portico, Work Complete

We believe that a sound aesthetic and historic perspective is essential.

Almost all of the National Trust houses and many of the Royal Palaces have called upon our services either as advisers or as contractors.

We have carried out many of the exemplary conservation tasks to guide the contractors restoring the temples in the Landscape gardens at Stowe: on the temples of Venus, Ancient Virtue, Rotunda, and within the temple of Concorde.

As advisers on plasters and mortars to the regions of the National Trust we play a central role in research in the weathering of traditional mortars for example at Corfe Castle and for 15 years we have lead the mortars course at Lacock Abbey for the National Trust.

Recent projects of note have been:

 ·

the conservation of the West doorway at Selby Abbey

 ·

the completion of the stone conservation of Ightham Mote (a project that has been underway for over 15 years)

 ·

the repair of the decorative stone on the South side of Vanbrughs Stowe Mansion (we also returned the large ornate escutcheons to the north and south colonnades of the North side and the 8 flame finial urns on the mansion parapet)

 ·

the marble doorway between the saloon and the Dining Hall of Vanbrughs Blenheim Palace

 ·

restoration of the famous Jacobean kings fountain at the Palace of Linlithgow with the stone masons of Historic Scotland.
